Lew.Wallace seemed to think he was from Terre Haute...

He told census taker Lorenzo Labadie 'I'm from Missouri' and the sucker wrote it down without blinking...

mebbe we should all be a bit 'from Missouri' when it comes to believing Billy boy...

Anyone from the Hoosier State willing to check McCart(h)ys out c 1866-1871 ish
in Terre Haute records?

I"ve always felt like he was from Indiana. He told alot of people in silver Springs that he was born in Anderson,Indiana. After spending hrs. trying to locate birth and marriage records on family members that lived back at the turn of the century i understand now how Billy's true identity fell through the cracks.I used to scratch my head in disbelief at how no one could find out his true origins.A few hrs. spent on Ancestry.com and now I get it. lol!

Paulo, that is a mystery we will never solve. I favor Indiana myself but who knows for sure.

Paulo, I still think he was from right there in new Mexico. A good reason to hang around, Family and all.

There is good reason to believe that he was from Missouri. There is, in fact, an excellent trail from there including his whole family, father and all, with the right ages and names. But, like most things "Billy", the trail lacks the linkage to Lincoln County and thus makes Missouri no more reliable than all of the other locations that people have claimed as his origin.
