My wife and I enjoyed a very nice day together yesterday and in between visiting our daughter and going to the Ballpark in Arlington to see my Texas Rangers play ball, we happened upon an antique mall. I'm not real crazy about "browsing", but browse we did and lucky me; I happened upon a book seller and found a nice Lakeside Press hard cover version of George W. Coe's "Frontier fighter" which will go well with my Lakeside Press copy of "A Frontier Doctor" by Dr. Henry Holt.
Just goes to show ya fellas, a little shopping with the wife ain't all that bad sometimes!!
Happy trails ya'll

Those are good fines!! I don't have those two books in my collection...that's something I'm going to have to remedy. Wink

I heard that George W. Coe's "Frontier Fighter" was edited to fit the myth of Billy the Kid and that George Coe's true manuscript is out there somewhere (possibly in a descendants attic). Let me know if you find that too be true when you read the book.

Well, Marcelle I must admit I got so involved in my new civil war book by Bruce Catton, I haven't picked up the Coe book yet but I'll do that real soon and let ya know.

Davey and Marcelle:
UI tried to read Coe's book but it was so mish-mashed up with fact a fiction that I gave up on it. It seems that every body back then wanted to make themselves into the hero...Not much differant than today, is it.

Russ...one thing I've really enjoyed so far with this book was the terriffic historical introduction by Doyce Nunnis...pretty much a concise "everything you ever wanted to know about the LCW"...Coe tended to get his facts out of whack on a few occasions, at least according to the publishers but still a pretty good little book by someone who was there.
Just for grins tonight I got out my old VHS of "Gore Vidal's Billy the Kid"...Vidal got a lot of the names right but please...Pat Garret getting teary eyed after shooting BTK...give me a break. cyclops

Actually Marcelle, the editing pretty much corrects most of Coe's inconsistencies with known facts..example..Coe states that certain things happened in the McSween house during the 5 day battle...Coe was not in the McSween house but holed up at the Ike Ellis store...Coe's obvious love and admiration for Billy slants the telling and thus the continued mystery and myths about our boy Billy. Coe however did a pretty darned good job and much credence must be given as he was there and knew Billy and the LCW quite well.
